Drakensberg and Eastern Free State Touring Map South Africa
The Eastern Free State borders onto the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho to the East.
Lesotho separates the Eastern Free State from the Barrier of Spears better known
as the Drakensberg (Dragon Mountains). Mountains reach heights in excess of 2,700
metres.
The major towns and road covered in the Free State are Winburg, adjacent to the N1 in the west to Harrismith in the east. The towns of Senekal, Paul Roux, and Bethlehem along the N5 lead towards Harrismith which is the Free State gateway to the magnificent Drakensberg region. The road skirts the Golden Gate Qwa Qwa National Park just south of Kastell. The important holiday and recreational town of Clarens is just to the east of this National Park.
Driving south west from Clarens the road leads through Ficksburg (the Cherry growing capital of South Africa) to the Lesotho border's Maseru entrance.
