Richtersveld National Park and Northern Namaqualand Map South Africa
Amazing Botanical and Cultural Landscapes
The Richtersveld is a desert. It is a World heritage Site and was proclaimed as a National Park in 1991. The Richtersveld region is in the extreme north west of South Africa and borders onto south western Namibia. The Richtersveld covers an area of some 1.600 square kilometres.
The Richterveld is a far away and remote place. It is surrounded by dramatically diverse regions... the Atlantic Ocean is to the west, the Kalahari dry savannah and semi desert to the east and the Namib Desert to the north. Rain is sporadic and in short supply. The Richtersveld is characterized by its wide range of succulent plants which with their thick leaves store moisture for long periods. Summer temperatures can easily reach 50 degrees C.
The Richterveld is not a place for the faint-hearted and it should only be travelled in conjunction with other vehicles. A GPS is an essential requirement when tackling this landscape and this map should be seen as a planning tool rather than to be used as a navigation instrument. If you want to experience walking around in a remote and fascinating area then the Richtersveld is for you.
